Floating Offshore Wind Taskforce report highlights opportunity for industrial development

09/10/24

9 October 2024 - Offshore Wind Industry Council press release

Commenting on the publication today of the Floating Offshore Wind Taskforce report “Floating Wind: Anchoring the next generation offshore”, the Industry Vice-Chair of the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) Susie Lind, Managing Director at BlueFloat Energy Nadara Partnership, said:

“This report sets out in detail how floating wind can enable the UK to take a major step forward not only in clean power generation but also in industrial development in the decades ahead. Government and industry have a great opportunity to build on the success of the floating projects already generating in UK waters by procuring greater volumes of new capacity in every upcoming clean power auction, supporting early stage projects.

“This would stimulate new supply chain growth, with the potential to manufacture and assemble components for floating turbines on quaysides around the UK, with an initial focus on ports in Scotland, Wales and the south west of England where the first wave of major floating projects will be built.

“By enacting the measures set out in this report, the UK can secure its position as a leader in the global race to develop this transformational technology at scale and export it worldwide. This would create tens of thousands of new jobs, attract billions in private investment and strengthen our energy security by harnessing the power of our exceptionally strong wind resources in deeper waters further offshore”.

The report “Floating Wind: Anchoring the next generation offshore” is being published on the first day of RenewableUK’s Floating Offshore Wind 2024 conference and exhibition in Aberdeen.

The report was produced by the Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) Taskforce, a joint Government-industry initiative working to support and accelerate the development of the UK floating wind sector. The work was funded by The Crown Estate, Crown Estate Scotland, Floating Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence, RenewableUK, Scottish Renewables, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise, and the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC).
